Egg Freezing

Preserving the Future of Your Fertility

For most women, their most fertile period is usually in their 20's and early 30's. However, it's not uncommon for a woman to find that these peak years don't coincide with her ideal time to start a family. That's where freezing comes into play.

Egg freezing allows a moment in time to be captured, which usually means that eggs can be retrieved and stored for the right time to start your family. This may be after you've graduated from university, at a certain point in your career, when you've found the right partner, or after an invasive medical procedure such as cancer treatment. Whatever your reason for freezing your eggs, our team of experienced, board-certified doctors at our fertility clinic are here to help you prepare for your future.

Advances in egg freezing

Unlike sperm, which has been successfully frozen and used for many years, the freeze and thaw survival rate for eggs was historically around 30%. However, since adopting a new technique called ‘vitrification’ in our laboratory, our freeze and thaw survival rates are over 80%. And better still, if you decide to use your eggs in the future, recent studies show the pregnancy rate for IVF/ICSI using frozen eggs is comparable to those of fresh eggs.

Steps in the Egg Freezing Process

We have shared the egg freezing process for you down below. You can also contact us for more details.

The first step to freezing your eggs is to check-up with our fertility specialist. We’ll carry out through screening and testing blood test and ultrasound scans to determine if the treatment is good for you. Then if you decide to go ahead, we’ll show you how to self-administer the medications during treatment.

To maximize the number of eggs we collect, you’ll start daily injections to stimulate the growth of follicles in your ovaries. During this time, we’ll monitor you with blood tests and ultrasound scans every few days. When ready, we’ll ask you to take a “trigger” injection to stimulate the final maturation of your eggs.

We’ll collect your eggs using a needle inserted through the vagina under ultrasound guidance. The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes and you’ll be given a mild intravenous sedation, so you don’t feel any pain. Once the doctor is ready to discharge you, you’re free to go home the same day.

All the suitable eggs will be carefully frozen to-196 °C in liquid nitrogen and safely stored for you up to 55 years for medical reasons, or 10 years for social reasons.
