A transvaginal ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the inside of your body, specifically within the pelvis area. It does this with a transvaginal ultrasound wand or probe (also known as a transducer) that contains soundwave transmitters and receivers. These soundwaves bounce off tissues and organs inside you and send ‘echoes’ of those bounces back to the receivers to create a moving image, which your doctor can see on a monitor during the scan.
Transvaginal means 'through the vagina', so your doctor will insert the wand into your vagina. Most woman find it more comfortable than a smear test.
He’ll ask you to remove your underwear and lie down on your back for the procedure. You’ll also be given a disposable skirt to cover yourself, so you’re more comfortable. You might be asked to raise your knees or let them fall to each side to make insertion easier and more comfortable.
The transvaginal ultrasound probe or wand is slim and compact, just a little larger than a tampon. It'll be covered with a disposable protective 'sheath' a bit like a condom (if you're allergic to latex, just let them know). Your doctor will also use a lubricating gel to make insertion easier, which might feel a bit cold.
You might feel a little discomfort as the wand moves around inside, but don't worry, this shouldn't be painful. If you experience any discomfort or if anything doesn't feel right, please let the doctor know.
Your doctor will take a closer look at your reproductive organs include the vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus (womb), cervix, bladder.
The scan can help find any problems in the womb or pelvis and diagnose conditions like ectopic pregnancy (where a fetus has implanted outside the womb),abnormalities in the womb and ovaries (such as cysts, tumors, fibroids or polyps), pelvic inflammatory disease (an infection of the womb, fallopian tubes or ovaries), miscarriage (pregnancy loss), polycystic ovary syndrome (a condition that causes irregular periods), endometriosis (where endometrial tissue grows in the ovaries and fallopian tubes), confirming early pregnancy.
After your scan, your doctor will look at your images and write a report about what he found. Ultrasound images and the electronically signed report will be stored in a special memory stick which will be given to you.
Your doctor will explain the results, answer any questions, and recommend the next steps in your treatment.
