A nuchal translucency (NT) scan is an optional scan performed in the first trimester of pregnancy. It helps determine your baby's risk of congenital conditions such as Down's syndrome.
The scan takes place between 20-24 weeks and looks at your baby's bones, heart, brain, spinal cord, face, kidneys and abdomen to check for 11 different physical and chromosomal conditions.
During this scan the baby is measured to estimate fetal weight, amniotic fluid, fetal movement is assessed, and color doppler examination of blood flow to the placenta and fetus may be measured.
