Embryo Transfer

Embryo Transfer:

Regardless of whether you have a fresh or frozen embryo transfer, you and your partner (if applicable) will be brought into the treatment room for your embryo transfer. The embryologist will verify your identity and confirm the number and identity of the selected embryos.

The ultrasound transmits sound waves, so a full bladder allows for clear imaging of the uterus.  To ensure an optimal bladder filling for the transfer, we kindly request you to drink 1 to 1,5 liters of water prior to your scheduled appointment.   This allows your physician to place your embryo(s) at the most optimal location within the uterine lining.

Please note that you will either wear a gown or remove your trousers and underwear for the procedure. The next step is for you to be assisted onto the examination table and to lie on your back. An ultrasound probe will be placed on your lower abdomen to confirm the location of the uterus and ascertain if the uterine lining can be seen easily.

The physician will insert a speculum into the vagina and identify the cervix. Any excess mucus or discharge will be removed, and the physician will proceed with the next step.

Once the embryo(s) has been selected by the embryologist, it will be loaded into a special embryo transfer catheter containing a small amount of fluid and air. 

The physician will then place the embryo catheter through the cervical external opening using ultrasound guidance. Subsequently, the catheter's tip will be placed in the uterine cavity at a depth of approximately one to 1-1,5 centimeters from the uterine fundus..

Using the attached syringe, your physician will push the syringe handle and the embryo(s) will then be transferred from the catheter tip into the lining of the uterus. Once the transfer has been completed and the embryo(s) are confirmed to be in the uterine cavity, first the catheter then the speculum will be slowly removed, and the procedure will be concluded.

Once the embryo transfer has been completed, you will be asked to rest in the transfer room for 10 minutes. Once the procedure is complete, you will be able to dress, empty your bladder, and leave the facility. There is no sedation or pain medication required for this procedure.
